Whether your talent is singing, writing, art, music, acting, painting or playing an instrument, you will need to market yourself to land gigs. Making a freelance career and landing creative jobs will begin with advertising and sending out resumes that link to an online portfolio of your samples. Design your creative portfolio before you start communications from potential clients.
When you begin applying for creative positions or talent opportunities, make sure that your portfolio is professional looking. You can load your designs or samples into a free blog, if you like, as long as it does not look cheap. The competition will be using great presentations of their work and so should you. Always be sure that the portfolio is kept up to date with your most recent art or samples, along with your qualifications list that should be included.
Once you have started the communication with a prospective client and a couple of days have gone by, it is perfectly fine to send a follow-up email to them. The initial follow up with the client should be very professional and respectful. It should not sound too pushy or desperate, because that tends to turn off clients. They don’t want to be pushed into anything and they may still be in their decision process. If you seem to be desperate to them, it may lose you their respect and the gig that you are trying to land. Many times, a client will have just gotten busy and will appreciate that you touched base with them. Be courteous with clients and you can easily land gigs for a freelance career.
